Neutron backscattering provides higher energy resolution than TOF or TAS by using crystal analysers that operate in a backscattering geometry. There are 2 dedicated spectrometers which differ essentially in terms of the energy of the incident neutrons and thus the energy resolution and momentum transfer.
Neutron scattering is the technique of choice for condensed matter investigations in general because thermal/cold neutrons are a non-invasive probe; they do not change the investigated sample since they do not deposit energy into it.
Inelastic scattering that is centered at E = 0 and associated with diffusional behavior, is called quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS). N.B. Neutron spectroscopy measures the atomic and magnetic motions of atoms. Inelastic neutron scattering measures the change in the energy of the neutron as it scatters from a sample. Neutron scattering, the irregular dispersal of free neutrons by matter, can refer to either the naturally occurring physical process itself or to the man-made experimental techniques that use the natural process for investigating materials. The natural/physical phenomenon is of elemental importance in nuclear engineering and the nuclear sciences.

The instruments represent four major neutron scattering techniques—diffraction, reflectometry, small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), and spectroscopy. Each technique will provide unique pieces of the complex puzzle at the atomic and molecular scales. The simplicity of the neutron-nucleus interaction permits the easy calculation of the neutron vibrational spectrum: mode frequencies and mode intensities. The similarity of neutron vibrational spectroscopy with its well-known optical counterparts makes VISION an easy-to-use instrument for scientists already familiar with Infrared and Raman

Scattering with nonzero E, e.g. to study vibrational excitations, is called inelastic scattering. Inelastic scattering that is centered at E = 0 and associated with diffusional behavior, is called quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS). N.B. Neutron spectroscopy measures the atomic and magnetic motions of atoms.
Neutron scattering is an extremely powerful tool in the study of elemental excitations in condensed matter. This book provides a practical guide to basic techniques using a triple-axis spectrometer.

This implies that no details of the core can be seen and the scattering potential can be described by a single constant b, the scattering length: This is called the Fermi pseudo potential. B is a phenomenological constant

In a back-scattering spectrometer, both monochromator and analyser are operated under backscattering conditions, which allows to obtain energy resolutions between 10-3 and 10-4 eV. Beside the three axes (monochromator (6), sample (9), analyser (11)) there are two more elements in the beam path.
