Hannibal Hamlin, (born Aug. 27, 1809, Paris Hill, Maine, U.S.—died July 4, 1891, Bangor, Maine), 15th vice president of the United States (1861–65) in the Republican administration of President Abraham Lincoln. Hamlin was the son of Cyrus Hamlin, a physician, sheriff, and farmer, and Anna Livermore. Hannibal Hamlin owed his classical name to his grandfather Eleazer Hamlin, a man well read in history, who named his first son after the Roman general Scipio Africanus (everyone called the boy Africa) and called his twin sons Cyrus, after the great Persian conqueror, and Hannibal, after the Carthaginian general who crossed the Alps on elephants in his campaigns against Rome. Hannibal Hamlin served as the 15th Vice President of the United States, from 1861 to 1865, in the Republican administration of President Abraham Lincoln. Born to a farmer, Hamalin, after studying in Hebron Academy, worked on his family farm for a while and later managed a weekly newspaper.
